The Orion 10022 StarMax 90mm Maksutov-Cassegrain telescope is a great choice for amateur astronomers who are mostly interested in observing the planets and moons in the solar system. The StarMax 90mm has high magnification and a small field of view, making it ideal for close-up views of the moon, Saturn, Jupiter and other nearby objects.. Orion StarMax 90: First light & review - posted in Cats & Casses: Ive been a dob guy for most of my astronomy days (nights, actually), and prefer to observe galaxies and distant globulars. But since I now live in a very light-polluted area, with street lights totally illuminating my back yard, the DSO hunt is next to impossible..
The long, 1250mm (f/13.8) focal length gives the StarMax 90 TableTop some serious magnifying power - the included 25mm and 10mm 1.25" eyepieces yield powers of 50x and 125x, respectively. It collects over 25% more light than its GoScope 80 cousin, and up to 225% more light than a 60mm refractor telescope.. The Starmax 90 has an aperture of 90mm, a focal length of 1250mm resulting in a very narrow focal ratio of f/13.9. This means that the device will be able to achieve a max magnification of around 160x - 180x whilst its focal ratio of 13.9 will make it a great telescope for planetary viewing if you can find yourself in a comfortable position to do so.
