I've stumbled upon a DBX 586 dual channel tube pre for $200 and have been playing around with it. It seems that the DBX has a greater range - the cleaner signals seem cleaner than the MPA Gold at it's cleanest setting, and the driven signals seem dirtier than the MPA Gold at it's most driven setting. The limiter on the DBX actually sounds.. The sound of the Dbx 586 is awesome as the real vacuum tubes give your tone a really warm sound. It will color your sound a little, but it only adds to the beefiness of the sound coming in. I have used the Dbx 586 on a number of different instruments including vocals, electric and acoustic guitars, bass guitar, and electric keyboards.
DBX 586. I just picked up a dbx 586 for about 400 dollars on ebay I know that since this is a Starved Tube Design, the tube is pretty much a waste of time. But how does it sound without the tubish distortion added in? Is it worth me keeping?
