Primal tells its story in visuals so well it doesn't require a single line of dialogue. The stereotype of adult cartoons as ugly is being heavily challenged by these series. One area where adult animation does still seriously need to catch up to children's programming is in its representation of women's perspectives.. To me, the problem isn't that adult cartoons "need to look ugly", used to be and I certainly still dislike certain shows for that, Mr. Pickles being my go-to example.

It was the early 2010s where adult animation seemed to particularly hit its notorious rut. It started standard enough with a new Fox mainstay in "Bob's Burgers", still a family sitcom but a likable and tame one. But within a couple years, Family Guy copycats began to rear their ugly head with shows like "Brickleberry" and "Allen Gregory", opting for tasteless, grossout humor over any level of.. why is western animation so often deliberately ugly? why so visually repulsive? why have we let this permeate our culture? from Spongebob to Family Guy, Rick and Morty to Big Mouth, Steven Universe to Simpsons to Rugrats—a dozen styles, all seemingly consciously hideous. Why?
